**Caution: Some comments may be disturbing to read, but we feel that to sugar-coat these comments would undermine the purpose of this site. Comment of the month: Name: Anonymous I am the fiancé' of a 27 year old man who has been addicted to 'G' for approximately 18 months. I have seen and tried to understand some of the most bizarre behavior imaginable. It is a miracle the he is still alive today. He has 'fallen out' at the wheel of a car twice and totaled BOTH of those cars. Numerous times I would come home from work or wake up in the middle of the night or even just enter a room that he had been in for some time and find him passed out naked on the floor breathing erratically, sometimes holding his breath in his sleep, falling into his plate while out to dinner. He couldn't remember if I had said something to him 5 minutes after I had already repeated myself 10 times. In April of 2000 he was taken to an ER in a nearby city by a 'friend' because he was out partying and he had stopped breathing. He was in the ICU for 48 hours and when they took him off of the sedatives he signed himself out of the hospital and was angry that he was taken to the ER. On October 18,2000 he started to go through withdrawal. He was sweaty, his heart would be racing and all he would be doing at the time is sitting still, or should I say trying to sit still. We went through a few days of this along with high levels of irritability. Then.....the sleeplessness and hallucinations began. I called every hospital and treatment facility in my area and no one had ever heard of GHB. I ended up explaining it to them only to be told that they couldn't help me because they had never heard of it. Finally, his hallucinations were so terrible I took him to the emergency room and when I tried to explain GHB and what he was going through I was looked at as if I were on something. He became so irritated that we ended up walking out before he could be seen. Out of sheer desperation, I tried once again calling the local in patient treatment center. This time I was told to TRY calling the Poison Control Center. When I called they immediately knew about GHB and told me that I needed to take him back to the ER and have them call the Poison Control Center so they could best tell them how he should be treated. To make this long story short, we got nowhere. and he went back to using for a short time. He is now 8 days clean and attending NA meetings every night. The withdrawal this time was not anywhere as severe as the first time. There are so many other things that I have witnessed associated with GHB. I am frustrated, angry, amazed and shocked that when someone needs help with this DEADLY addiction, no one knows what it is or where to begin with treatment. If people are DYING from something the first ones to be educated about it SHOULD be our ER's and treatment centers. Thank you for listening to my story. If you are using, seek help and find your local NA program, addiction is a disease. [top] |
