I've been taking Xyrem for a couple years now, and have not experienced withdrawals when I don't take it. I take drug "holidays" when I take vacations, and have had no problem going off the GHB (Xyrem), or Speed (aka Dextroamphet), for weeks at a time!
Ironically before I started Xyrem, I considered myself to have a very addictive personality, since I used to be a regular drinker. But now I don't have any desire to drink. Also being able to stop taking my meds without any problems has really freed me.
There may be people who have problems with Xyrem, so I guess those people should not take it, but for me, the medicine has been a lifesaver! When I take it I can actually be productive all day without having those debilitating sleep attacks, which nobody could comprehend, unless they experienced them.

It seems that the "GHB Project" staff should be required to have a particular condition before discrediting drugs that are helping those people who do. I would have much reservation about being so against something I had no experience with!

NOTE: Ifve never taken GHB even once, but I have a great deal of ability to comprehend what GHB addicts and their families and drug rape victims go through, just as Ifm able to comprehend and deal with people who have suffered a great deal of other things without having the malady myself. Should doctors have to have had a disease in order to research or treat it? Hardly. The number of people damaged by GHB far and away exceeds the handful it has helped. The company pushing Xyrem has already been in trouble for their misbehavior (behavior that we predicted from the start). Withdrawals usually donft happen to those taking it on such a limited basis, at least not severe withdrawals. But for those who start to up the amount on their own, sip it at times other than bedtime (and it has happened with Xyrem patients), etc. and for those who abuse GHB in general, it can be a horrific downfall. One shouldnft downplay their agony. Ifm glad it has worked for you. You are lucky, and I hope you continue to do well with it. --TrinkaP

I lived with severe Narcolepsy for most of my life, including 3 years active U.S. Army and 13 months in the combat zones of Viet Nam. I was diagnosed in 1986, but the Cataplexy little brother was not part of that diagnosis. In 2004 I signed up for 12 weeks of research and the sleep disorders clinic where I underwent this sleep study helped me find my current medical regimen. It was suggested that because of the potency of the new prescription drug to keep me awake in the day time, that I go on a regimen of Xyrem at night. The dose of 12 milliliters was to be taken in two doses, 6ml per. After watching the video on the correct way to administer the Xyrem, I decided to start the dose at 3ml, twice nightly. This seemed to work very well, and after a week of this I increased the dose to 4ml x 2. At this level, I found myself "groggy" through most of the morning, and into the early afternoon. I went to the 6ml x 2 dose and found myself in a stupor, and without motivation well into the afternoon.

I went for nearly 50 years to find a drug to keep me awake, and was not going to let the "necessary" night time sleep rob me of that. I have since found alternate OTC drugs that give me a restful night, and often sleep for 9 hours. I'm still alert and busy in the day, but have had to live with the cataplexy. My choice. I called the Xyrem Support group and stopped the prescription.

I am sure that all of us have our own personal experiences, and believe that the drug should be there for those who can use it correctly. I also believe our government should take the responsibility for their "poor handling" of drug abusers and drug dealers. Do not punish the individuals who have prescribed Xyrem, just because some evil person wants to make an illegal dollar, or commit a crime using this drug.

GHB!! this to a responsible raver is by far the worst drug used in the scene today. Everyone who has respect for the music and the people don't use GHB. Across the board 80% of ravers and events are all against the use of GHB because it is having a bad repacusion on the scene. These new kids come out and they think its all about the drugs well ask any older raver its about the music and your friends the only reason you take the drugs is to keep you going for prolonged periods of time. every Venue i no and every event you go to is nuckeling down on the use of GHB because it is horrible to see people leaving in ambulances every hour not knowing if they will be ok. Also the common street names in Victoria for GHB is "Juice" "G". anyone on juice would normally get referred to by others as a "juice pig" and ODing on juice is commonly referred to as "BLOWING OUT". this is just a insight into the pity i have for these poor souls that use it because its cheap and nasty. SAVE UP FOR A MONTH AND BUY SOMETHING BETTER!!! instead of nearly killing yourselves every weekend!!!

NOTE: As of late 2007 there is a move in Australia to stop abuse of GHB in the dance scene. See the gMake GHB Historyh site: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=296029970

I was possibly raped by a co-worker and there is an investigation ongoing. I can't remember details and had a burning in my lungs for three weeks after the event. I believe that I was ethered and given a gray capsule. At the few times that I was coming out of it the perp would kneel over me and stare in my eyes, but I was paralyzed and lay there with my eyes wide open. Perhaps fear too made me immobile. I was in the store parking lot and it all happened at driver's window which was down...and quickly. Investigators seem to never heard of such an reaction. 2.5 weeks after I went for help after my attacker made the statement that triggered some memory he said, "I didn't think you would come after what i did to you". Since then I recall dying and the perps used CPR to bring me back. I had no outward signs of injury.

NOTE: Whether or not it was GHB that was involved (more than 40 drugs have been used to facilitate sexual assault), it is a horrifying experience, to be sure. We hope that increased training for law enforcement and medical personnel about this crime and the effects of these drugs will result in rapid recognition of the signs/symptoms, faster response and thus better evidence and increased prosecutions. We also hope that prevention information gets out there and makes a difference too. If you think you have been drugged and raped, TIME is of the essence, get to a hospital and/or police station immediately. Some drugs, especially GHB, dissipate rapidly from the system. Time is crucial.

My son Chris found that Butyrolactone had some of the same properties as GHB when metabolized. His downfall began with bodybuilding products-he went from a very healthy and happy young man who wanted to start his own gym to a seriously troubled addict. He used GHB for years when it was legal, and then for awhile after. His obsession with this drug led him to all kinds of other self medications and legal trouble. He discovered Butyrolactone was the closest legal thing to GBH he could find and he mixed it with vodka, his anti-anxiety and depression meds. Chris was ordering the Butyrolactone by the case on the Internet. I don't know what web site. GHB may not have been the direct cause of his death on 2-26-07, but it was his drug of choice and he was completely obsessed with it and there is no doubt in my mind that had he never read about GHB in a muscle magazine, he would be alive and healthy today.

Chris was not responding to phone calls in February of this year. I went to his apartment to check on him and found him dead. The autopsy lists acute ethanol poisoning as the cause. There was a bottle of Butyrolactone and a bottle of vodka on the counter.

Physician prescribed XYREM (GHB) for my 44 year old sonfs severe sleep deficit. On 11-8-05 he died in his sleep after taking the first half of dose upon retiring. Second half of each dose is to be taken a few hours after retiring, (supposed to set alarm to awaken for this second half.) Michael died before second half of the dosage could be consumed. This is extremely powerful medication and should be reevaluated by FDA for possible removal from market... as it was earlier when used in rape cases. Why was it ever put on market............lobbying pressure on FDA by Jazz Pharmaceuticals perhaps?????????????
NOTE: Actually the intense lobbying pressure was from Orphan Medical and then later they sold it to Jazz Pharmaceuticals who later paid a $20 million fine for illegally marketing GHB goff label.h

I am very concerned about a friend of mine. She went out last weekend to a bar. She had had a little too much to drink. She met this guy and she told me that she knows him very well ok. Well to make the story short. She thinks he may have put something in her drink. Told her i thought it might have been ghb. She has been having hallucinations being very confused and throwing up alot. She told me that she dont even remember leaving the bar with him. She also thinks he may have raped her but she is not sure. She has bruises all over her body. She doesn't want to go to police because she feels down graded. I keep on tell her she needs to report it but she wont listen to me. I am getting very worried about her. I am not sure what the symptoms are when someone gives u ghb. I would like more info about it. I think it is a shame that someone would do that to a person. I also think it is sick and that they will burn in hell for it.

my x partner & i, went through a 'phase' with ghb some 9 years ago. first we took it as you would with extasy and were careful to 'follow the rules' only take a small amount, avoid alcohol etc. after a few occasions we started to have a drink with it, and I noticed the next morning i had a violent headache. robby did not notice the same effect, not straight away anyhow. a friend of ours was also partial to ghb, he said he liked to mix it with amphetamines and didn't drink at all, so hadn't experienced any ill affects we were getting. one night, we had guests over and the four of us had taken ghb, with wine, our friends had to leave early and some of the wine laced with ghb had been left. so as not to waste it, i poured the drinks into one container ad put it away for the next time. we decided to indulge again the following night, and i poured myself a glass of the wine/ghb mix, and began to drink it, slowly, as you would a normal glass of wine, not in one gulp as you would to ingest a substance to get a kick. the next thing i remember was coming too, hours and hours later. i had no memory of falling asleep or of my son, who was only around 5yrs old, trying to wake me to say 'good-night' as he was going to my mothers flat downstairs from us for the night. this was the last time i participated in any ghb taking. this 'coma' plus the headaches i had experienced was enough to put me off taking it again. i couldnft quite figure out why such a small amount had such an affect on me, i had not finished my wine and therefore had not ingested a large amount, i would even say i thought i had less than the time before. whatever the reality was, i have had many thoughts on what could have happened, i believe i had a very lucky escape. it was not long after my incident that a young man was found dead after taking it with friends, apparently they had gone out and left him at home on the sofa, where he died and was unnoticed until the next day. the thought he was asleep and left him while they continued to party around him. they were unaware, like i was, of the dangers being misinformed that it was just like extasy, and the precautions were the same as e. it hasn't been as widespread in the uk as in other places across the globe, but due to lack of publicity
im sure it will again rear its ugly head. the young man i spoke of was a medicine student and im sure would have been a great asset to our medical profession should he have lived. my heart goes out to all affected by drug related deaths, family and friends alike. The friends of the young man have to live with the fact his death and many, many others could of been prevented with knowledge that this is a killer and if i had known it was glorified drain cleaner i would never entertained the idea of taking it as im sure most of the other people who have indulged would have either..

Thank you all for putting up this website. I was recently drugged with Ketamine/GHB after having it put into my drink in a club. I cannot put into words how scary this experience was and give thanks every day that i was with good friends who took me home and looked after me. This website address has now been forwarded to everyone in
my address book to warn them of the dangers of these drugs, what to look for and how to handle and get over the experience.
