U.S. News and World Report  (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/home.htm) is running a special article about GHB and Bodybuilding. The article may run as early as February 5. Check their website for the story. I will run a short piece when the article is out to remind subscribers.

The following item I received via a newsletter I subscribe to and I found it very interesting. Does not relate to GHB directly, but is interesting medically (of course, we realize that this news clip does not apply to ALL physicians...)

FIRST, CAUSE NO HARM: Faced with increasing drug errors made by doctors which kill as many as 100,000 Americans per year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has taken action. In meetings with doctors, the FDA found that many don't even bother to read the pages of fine print about drugs to see if they might kill their patients. But "physicians told us is if they were presented with information in a clear and useful way, they would read the label," the FDA says, so it has ordered that the prescription information produced by drug companies be rewritten so that doctors can find warnings on a drug's hazards within 30 seconds. (AP) ...Thirty seconds? What, and miss the next two appointments?

Did you know? NIDA hosted a June 27, 2000 conference to facilitate scientific dialogue and refine NIDA's research agenda concerning GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate). Abuse of GHB has increased dramatically during the past 10 years, both in the United States and internationally. The drug, which has sedative effects, has been associated with sexual assaults. Researchers focused on GHB abuse patterns and trends; pharmacology and toxicology; clinical management of GHB overdose, poisoning, tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal; the roles of endogenous GHB in the normal brain and in neurological disorders; and the therapeutic potential of GHB. Speakers reported that even low doses of GHB can exert profound neuropharmacological and behavioral effects, and that higher doses can be particularly dangerous, because small increases in dose cause big increases in effect. The drug produces tolerance and dependence, with severe and potentially lethal withdrawal symptoms. Participants suggested that research priorities include treatment options for GHB toxicity and withdrawal as well as animal models of GHB addiction to investigate the neuronal circuitry involved, including the role of dopamine. For more information, see the NIDA Web page at www.drugabuse.gov or www.nida.nih.gov.

I came to this web sight after recently experiencing ghb first hand. I came across it at a friend's house. His roommate had it and said it was great for body building. Before leaving for work he left us with a soda bottle half filled. I know it was a stupid decision, but my friend and I took a couple big gulps of the stuff. Needless to say I feel very lucky to be here now, especially since reading this sight. If you want to know what happened to me then you should click on "while you were sleeping". It was a very similar scenario. It has been a couple days and my body still feels horrible. I am completely traumatized by the experience. I'm scared to go to sleep and feel very nervous and a lot of anxiety. All this and I'm usually regarded as a tough guy. I feel very lucky to be breathing today. I hope more people learn about this drug. It's not marijuana, kids, this stuff will kill you. If it doesn't kill you right away physically, it will kill you emotionally. Trust me on that one.

Believe me when I say I'm not one to jump on the DARE bandwagon but this is really negative stuff. Every person I've known who has taken it has gotten horribly sick, sometimes the first time or definitely after just a few. My best friend's date either took some or was slipped some last Christmas eve. She had to watch him "g" out and convulse on the floor of the bar they were at. Since he had once been a dealer in that relatively small town, an onlooker thought it was funny and started kicking him. Fortunately for them both, she found someone to carry him to her car and he seemed to be ok the next day. This same friend had tried it a few times but quit after she mixed it with alcohol and ended up puking in the alley behind a bar and blacking out for the next 8 hours or so. Another friend was slipped some at a bar and wondered into the bathroom where her friends didn't find her until closing time despite having looked for her in there. She had thrown up all over herself and managed to wedge her body behind the toilet.

Believe the hype and stay away. People die from this stuff all the time.

Tyler Johnson, whose story is on this website, was my best friend. We sat together on our first day of class in college, and had almost every class together thereafter. The problem with this drug is that the symptoms you would normally see in a person addicted to a drug are just not there. I did notice some nervousness and worried behavior in Ty, but just assumed it was relative to his upcoming start to law school. I will attend UALR School of Law - but because of GHB (BD), I will not be able to share this experience with my best friend. As Kathryn stated in her story, Tyler was full of life, personality, and had literally everything going for him. He was a brilliant man and should never have fallen victim to a substance that could take over his mind as it did. If there had been legislation against this drug, alerting potential users of its dangers, I don't believe Tyler would have been involved in it. Companies who sell this drug tout its safety and lead one to believe that it is highly beneficial to the body - most of us believe these statements must be factual if it isn't illegal - this just isn't true. I ask anyone who reads this message and loves anyone, to think about how it would affect you to lose them to such a senseless thing as GHB or any form of the drug, and to write your legislators to support the outlaw of all forms of these drugs. If you know someone who is taking the drug, DO something, anything you can to help them, even if it means making them mad or telling someone they may not want to know. Losing someone you love temporarily as a friend is better than them losing their life. Thank you for reading.

i posted a story about 7 8 months ago, and I just wanted to say, that there is life after ghb, another addictions. Things take time, and life is different. For the ones that had there lives spared, be grateful. For the ones that have moved on I am sorry for their friends and family, and let it be a learning experience. I just wanted to say, that no matter how bad u feel or bad things look, they do get better. Time is the only healing, but it takes time.
