    Hi
I work as an advanced Paramedic in Auckland, New Zealand. New Zealand is increasingly having a problem with GHB. I have spent several hours going through your site and am amazed at the work and the research that you have put into this.

For the people that decide to take this substance, please be so careful and ask yourself "The people that I am with can I count on them to look after me." As a Paramedic who has seen many and I mean many overdoses on G would like to give the following information.

When a drug such as this comes in a liquid form it is not possible to remotely guess or gauge the strength of mg/ml or gram/ml and as it so cheap and easy to obtain the suppliers are not as diligent or as tight as they are with other drugs such as MDMA or amphetamines.

If you decide to experiment with G you may find that you take 1.5ml on Thursday and everything is fine but on Saturday that 1.5ml put you in the back of my ambulance with a tube down your throat, so you can breathe and IVs in your arm. Different batches have different strengths so please for your own safety be safe.

As a paramedic working the city streets in little old New Zealand we have a ever escalating drug problem. The city I work in has a population of 1.6 million. Here are some facts and presentations of patients that I have seen on overdoses on G

    Yes -no gag reflex
Bradycardia (slow heart rate) of 20
Full Apnea - that is no breathing Resp Arrest
Aspiration -vomit in the lungs and trachea
    Bizzare uncontrollable violent muscle spasms.
    Full body seizures
    Urine and Fecal incontinence
    Severe Hyperthermia
    Trauma from the sudden collapse
    Death

If friends go unresponsive or asleep or collapse call your EMS service. It is an offence not to give assistance. The assistance you can give is Recovery position Check ABC and activate your EMS.

You can argue that ETOH and other drugs cause similar problems and I will not disagree. If i give you a glass of whiskey, you have a pretty good idea of how much whiskey is in it. Tell me how many mg or grams is in a teaspoon of G. This is the leading cause of Coma OVERDOSEAGE.

    ETOH + G = COMA

Please be safe, look after your friends and call the EMS

A Friend to Have Award

To counter the prevailing myth that people overdosing on the drug gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB) should be allowed to “just sleep it off,” Project GHB initiated the “A Friend To Have Award” honoring those

  1. with the courage not to let friends or others die needlessly from this dangerous drug,
  2. those who have escaped its addictive grip and taken time to help others, and
  3. those who have contributed dramatically to GHB prevention/treatment issues.

To see a list and pictures of those who have received this award, please visit our "A Friend to Have" Web Page.

Aqua Fina Tries to Defeat the Bad Guys

You may or may not have noticed a change in the Aqua Fina water bottle label. It is now being transitioned into a translucent label that you can easily see through. That wasn’t a fashion trend, but a real effort to stop a bad thing. Aqua Fina, Pepsi and Mountain Dew bottle designs have been used as “hidden compartment” containers here recently. The bottom of the bottles are sealed with actual drink product. The top portion of the bottle is a separate, reusable bottle, but the middle part (behind the label) was a hidden compartment for drugs or money or whatever. The top portion could be pulled out of the label area to access the compartment. While it COULD be used innocently, it was also clearly designed to hide drugs and quite professionally done.

Other brands may do likewise with their labels as clearly any brand could be used in this way. There have always been hidden containers, from bean cans to hair spray, fire extinguishers (that had a little of actual product but most of the container was a hidden compartment), etc. While they may be good for hiding your personal money from burglars, they are all too often used to conceal drugs or drug money.

Hats off to Aqua Fina for responding.

Parent Alert

Triple C or CCC—The Teen Threat

Parents, school administrators, counselors and store managers need to understand the significance of the terms Triple C, CCC, Red Devils or Orange Crush to today’s young teens, especially the 11-13 year old crowd.  These phrases refer to the over- the- counter medication Coricidin Cough & Cold.  It is a major product of abuse nationwide, especially among young teens.  School district and government officials from coast to coast are trying to bring awareness to this issue.

You’ll also hear the term Robotrippin in reference to the same issue (Robitussin cough syrup that contains the target ingredient).  The target is any OTC product containing dextromethorphan (DXM).  It is a common cough suppressant and is present in 30 mg doses in these products.  No problem.  If you take four doses throughout a 24 hour period, 120 mg in a day.  No problem.  But, taking enough at one time to consume more than 300 (target is 300 to 900) mg, it’s more like taking ketamine or PCP.  And, many end up in trouble, even in a coma, partly because of the dose itself and partly because of the other ingredients.

Consuming enough cough syrup to get the effects is tough on the tummy, all that sugary stuff, so kids switched to the pills, sometimes even grinding them up and snorting them.  Since they are reddish pills, the powder is somewhat orange in color; thus the nickname Orange Crush (which may also be used in reference to other drugs…..nicknames aren’t an exact science!).

Parents need to be alert to a child specifically requesting these products……… “Mom, I’m catching a cold.  I need you to buy me some Coricidin Cough & Cold.  Be sure you get the right kind.”  They are consuming 10 to 25 of these like candy, and it is scary.  It isn’t limited to any specific region.

Users can experience psychedelic effects when they take drugs that contain DXM, dextromethorphan, in large doses.  Those who misuse medication that contains chlorpheniramine maleate could suffer brain damage, or even die, when it is taken in large doses.  The typical presentation of DXM intoxication involves hyper excitability, lethargy, ataxia, slurred speech, sweating, hypertension, and/or nystagmus (involuntary eye movement).  According to one news wire story, fourteen people died last year in the United States by overdosing on cold medicine.

A major LA area grocery chain just had this Coricidin product on sale at a significant reduction, enabling customers to buy three packages at the special price, in a display with lots of them handily available.  In fact, the display arrangement and location made it easy to shoplift when the pharmacy clerks would turn away to get prescriptions for customers.  Ironically, the store manager said she was aware of the problem and was certain that her folks wouldn’t sell even three of them to young teens.  But, in fact, the clerks at the pharmacy (where you can pay and leave without going through the grocery line) had NO idea of the problem.

NOTE:  OTC products with ephedrine and pseudoephedrine have been of concern for some time and in many stores (varies by state) can’t legally sell more than a couple of packages because of the huge methamphetamine problem.  These ingredients are used to produce meth (it’s the primary ingredient) and in fact have similar effects and similar health risks as meth in large quantities.  There is growing concern about people taking large amounts of ephedrine (aka ma huang or efedra or ephedra) products for working out or weight loss (like Ripped Fuel, Metabolife, etc.).   Some states are now pushing for store controls on DXM products to avoid teens being able to shoplift or buy more than one or two boxes at a time.

Bottom line---drug abuse issues start at home and in one’s own heart and mind.  Regulations are important in helping deal with abuse factors, but the problem ends when the demand for drugs to abuse gets under control in each individual person!
