What is Rape?

"Sexual assault" is a term used to describe any type of sexual activity committed by one person without the consent of the other, whether by verbal or physical force or coercion.

When the perpetrator is a partner, date or acquaintance, it is called "acquaintance rape." "Date rape" is not necessarily an accurate term, but it is one used in the media quite frequently. The primary harm done by sexual assault and sexual abuse is often psychological and emotional rather than physical. Surviving sexual assault or abuse can be scary, painful and lonely. Even if the assault or abuse happened in your past, you may still have issues.

When rape occurs by means of drugging someone, the correct term is "drug-facilitated rape."
